Social Networking Sites: Neither Social Nor Networking?

I joined MySpace a while back. I had some fun. I liked the fact that I could use my limited HTML knowledge to customize my page. I made it green. I can't remember the last time I logged onto that site. It probably was just a few months ago, or maybe even weeks, but the last time I updated my profile or sent someone a message or did more than just log in and reject 30 friend requests from bands I've never heard of has to be years ago. I'll probably get around to deleting my account. Some day.

I joined Facebook a while back. A while after MySpace. I didn't like it at first. Ironically, it was supposed to be easier to use than MySpace but I couldn't really navigate around. I also couldn't flex my feeble HTML muscles either. My profile looks the same as everyone else's. I missed my green page. Eventually I became familiar with the interface, and a billion people I knew popped up. I had fun spying on them. Though I guess it's not really spying if you've got permission to look.

I joined Twitter a while back. A while after Facebook. Man, there's a useless site. I'm not the first to say this, I'm sure, but I sincerely predict that this site will either undergo a major overhaul that makes it more Facebook-like or it fades away into nothingness. You really can't do anything on it, and all kinds of marketing types use it to "connect" with people they think will buy their shit. Nobody cares. It is the definition of a fad and it will go the way of parachute pants very soon (though I hear parachute pants are coming back!). I'll probably get around to deleting my account. Some day.

Really... what's the point of these things? To "connect?" I guess. To "network?" I suppose so. I have to admit I've "connected" with a few people I thought I might never see again. Specifically a bunch of people from high school (15 years ago) that I forgot existed. Any void I may have had in my life certainly wasn't filled. It has been nice to see pictures of people's kids though...
